“Cal Shakes provided us with a teacher’s workshop that we attended as well as in-class workshops with talented teaching artists for our kids. It was the single most amazing teaching experience of my life; I’ve never seen kids so engaged. The high-level reading had them bursting with pride, the Bard’s bawdy words had them rolling with laughter, and the experience of traveling together in their community had them cooperating with each other and acting very grown-up.  They really grew with this experience—and I did as well.” —Jana Maiuri, English teacher at Edna Brewer Middle School, Oakland

CAL SHAKES’ ARTISTIC LEARNING EDUCATION PROGRAMS

We have several Artistic Learning Programs that offer a theater experience rooted in the same passion for artistic exploration and excellence that guides our award-winning Main Stage Productions. We provide a safe and nurturing environment in which our students can set aside limits: to discover, through the thrilling relevance of Shakespeare’s plays, uniquely creative skills that empower them academically and socially.

Student Discovery Matinees (SMAT) bring students to the Bruns to watch full performances of our Main Stage productions, engaging students with the magic of live theater.

The day of a SMAT performance at Cal Shakes includes:

  • an informative Teacher’s Guide
  • a lively pre-performance interactive engagement at the theater
  • a post-show Q&A session with the actors

Our fun, educational pre- and post-show classroom visits by highly trained Teaching Artists are available at a very reasonable additional charge, and help contextualize the play and prepare students to more deeply engage in the production.  We offer 4-5 matinees to each of our Shakespeare productions, serving 53 schools and 1,500 students—including 400 at no charge.

Classroom Residencies: Cal Shakes teaching artists partner with classroom teachers for over 50 residencies annually, serving 1,400 students in Oakland, Lafayette, Orinda, San Ramon, Hayward, El Cerrito and San Francisco. Of those students, nearly half attend underserved schools. The majority of students in our Oakland partner schools are from high-poverty communities; we are often the only exposure to the arts that the students experience in the course of a year.

Summer Conservatories: We also engage hundreds of young individuals in our Lafayette and Oakland Summer Shakespeare Conservatories (Summer Camp), where they learn stage combat, text analysis, voice, movement, Shakespearean history, and other professional theater skills from working actors and directors, culminating in a full performance of a Shakespeare play. Scholarships are also available to attendees.

“Cal Shakes always provides such a welcoming and engaging experience for our students. Their generosity allows us to bring Shakespeare into the lives of our urban students, making it accessible for learners of all abilities and interests.”
—Ashley Varady, sixth-grade reading teacher at KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy
