Much Ado About Nothing
By William Shakespeare
adapted by Kenneth Lin and Jackson Gay
with additional text by Kenneth Lin
Directed by Jackson Gay
May 25-June19

Shakespeare’s sharpest comedy about the thin line between love and hate is re-imagined through the eyes of Dogberry and his men, taking Beatrice and Benedick’s highfalutin “will-they-or-won’t-they" affair to a new level of hilarity. Director Jackson Gay, named one of the “power players of Off-Broadway” by the New York Times (along with House of Cards writer Kenneth Lin) adds some surprising new twists to this classic and classist tale.

August Wilson's Fences
Directed by Raelle Myrick-Hodges
presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH, Inc.
July 6-31

This powerful drama about a middle-class family’s disillusion with the American dream marks two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner August Wilson’s Cal Shakes debut. Directed by former Brava Theater Artistic Director, Raelle Myrick-Hodges, Fences introduces audiences to one of the great tragic figures of American drama: Troy Maxson, a charismatic baseball player-turned-sanitation worker. With his solid paycheck, hard lessons in tough love, and his loyal wife Rose by his side, Troy is the de facto head of the household; but when an affair is exposed, strength comes from an extraordinary place.

You Never Can Tell
By George Bernard Shaw
Directed by Lisa Peterson
August 10–September 4

At one riotous lunch, Mrs. Clandon, a famed feminist author and lecturer, is accidentally reunited with her estranged husband, while her high-minded eldest daughter tries to stave off a smooth-talking dentist’s advances. Originally set at a stuffy seaside resort, director Lisa Peterson moves Shaw’s off-beat comedy out of the drawing room and into the modern world. Identities are confused, ideals are challenged, and mischief is afoot in this turn-of-the-century romantic farce. What could possibly happen? As a wise waiter continuously, and hilariously, observes, “You never can tell.”

Othello
By William Shakespeare
Directed by Eric Ting
September 14–October 9

Black. Muslim. Outsider. These are the labels Shakespeare’s most famous Moor has carried with him as he’s climbed the military ranks. Having survived battle after battle in faraway lands, Othello’s greatest tragedy lies in those closest to him: his trusted friend, his beloved wife—and himself. In his Cal Shakes directorial debut, artistic director Eric Ting confronts our society’s fear of “the other” head on in this gripping and provocative interpretation of Othello.
